Our Story

The Drey Custom Wood Shop was born from a love of creating, a connection to nature, and the memories of a childhood home. The name The Drey comes from the house where I grew up, lovingly named after a squirrel’s nest—a drey—carefully woven from sticks and twigs. That image has always stayed with me: a safe, sturdy home built with care and intention. It perfectly captures the spirit behind every piece of furniture I create.

What started as a simple way to pass the time during the COVID lockdown soon became so much more: a dream to step into early retirement and dedicate myself fully to the craft of fine woodworking. Over the years, I’ve invested time in learning techniques, mastering tools, and shaping pieces that are as functional as they are beautiful.

This journey also inspired a life change for my family. After more than two decades in Ontario, we moved to Nova Scotia, where the slower pace and stunning landscapes have deepened my appreciation for thoughtful, lasting craftsmanship.

At The Drey, every creation has a story. Each piece of furniture is named after a beloved family pet, giving it a personality all its own. Whether you’re here to find a finished piece or collaborate on a custom design, my goal is to create something that brings warmth and character into your home—just like that old drey did for me..
